A study on the deontological-ethical problems encountered in clinical veterinary practice in Turkey

Abstract

The main material of the present study, which was aimed at the holistic assessment of the deontological-ethical infringements encountered in clinical veterinary practice in Turkey, was comprised of data obtained by the conduct of questionnaires, including a Scale of the Opinions of Veterinarians on Deontological-Ethical Behaviour specifically designed for the study, among 355 veterinary practitioners. The scale was developed by means of factor analysis. The study demonstrated the occurrence of various deontological-ethical infringements in clinical veterinary practice, which were grouped under four titles, namely, professional selfrespect and competition, relations with the patient and animal owner, relations among colleagues, advertising and working without owning a veterinary clinic. It was determined that infringements were most frequently encountered in “professional self-respect and competition”. In this group, the most frequently observed infringements were competition based on the pricing of veterinary clinical services rather than on quality (X=2.23), non-compliance with the minimum wage rate (X=2.39), and unfair competition in the sales of veterinary drugs (X=2.54)
