Serum lipid profile in sheep with fluorosis
Abstract
Fluor poisoning due to receiving high amount of fluor is called Fluorosis. Fluorosis is endemic in Van and Agri cities which are volcanic lands of Eastern Anatolia region. In our study triglyceride, total cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein (VLDL-C), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) levels were examined in Morkaraman sheep with natural florosis raised in Van Caldiran. According to clinical investigation, samples were taken for the purpose of the study from the 16 sheep with florosis raised in the Yaniktas and Kilavuz towns of Van province Caldiran district. Sheeps mentioned above included in the trial group with the urine fluor level more than 5 ppm. Thirteen control group animals were chosen from the cental district of Van as there is not any evidence and history of fluorosis. Urine fluor level of control group was below 5 ppm. In sera of the animals’ triglyceride, total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein levels were determined. Very low density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein levels were calculated from an equation. In conclusion, as a consequnce of raise in triglyceride, total cholesterol, VLDLC and LDL-C fraction (p ≤ 0.05) lipid profile was altered. In HDL-C levels no significant changes was observed (p ≥ 0.05). Similarity of altered lipid profile in both renal failure and chronical florosis made us think that these results were because of kidney damage due to high floride levels
