Light and electron microscopic studies on the structure of the male reproductive system in quail(Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the histological structure of the testis, epididymis and ductus deferens of quail male reproductive system by light and electron microscopy. In this study, tissue samples taken from 10 of the healthy and mature male quails were used as material. Relatively low number of Leydig cells and thin connective tissue trabecules were seen in the intertubular spaces. Seminiferous tubuli directly opened to rete testis (RT). Ductuli efferentes (DE) were investigated into two separate parts, as proximal (DE-P) and distal (DE-D). RT directly connected to DE-P. opened into connecting ducts those finally formed unique ductus epidymidis of each testis. Next to ductus epididymidis and located out of epididymis, ductus deferens opened into cloaka after contortion. In electron microscopic investigation, Leydig cells were seen interstitium and two types of the cells were distinguished. One type had many secretory granules and mitochondri while the 2 nd type contained less numerous mitochondria and electron-lucent vacuoles. DE’s epithelium was formed by two types of cells, ciliated and non-ciliated. Non-ciliated cells located in DE-P had empty centred lipid vacuole and large, dense granules. Non-ciliated epithelial cells of DE-D did not contain lipid vacuoles. Apocrine type secretion was observed in at the epithelium of ductus epididymidis. Apocrine type secretion, was peculiar to the caudal ductus deferens, where as it was not seen in the cranial part. As a result, histology of RT, DE, CD, ductus epididymidis and ductus deferens of quail male reproductive system was introduced by light and electron microscopy
