Liver and serum vitamin A-carotene levels in broilers following dietary aflatoxin exposure

Abstract

Senım and liver vitamin A-carotene Ievels were investigated in broilers exposed to SO, i00. SOO and 1000 ppb of aflatoxin (AF) during 45 days. Totally, 75 broilers were divided into 5 groups containing 15 broilers in each group. Control group was fed with normal feed. Trial groups were fed with AF added feed. Ad !ibitum water was given to broilers in all groups. On the 151h, 30lh and 45lh days of the study, five animals from trial and control groups were slaughtered to abtain the blood andliveı' tissues. Vitamin A and carotene levels were measured spectrophotometrically on these tissues. Statistical significance of average meaııs accarding to the time and dose of aflatoxin intake and differences between groups were evaluated using nonparametric varians analysis and Mann- Whitney-U test. Vitamin A levels were initially decreased following the intake of feed added AF. Fallawing this dec'rease vitamin A levels were increased depend on the doses of AF. Moreover, vitamin A levels in broilers consumed 1000 ppb AF for 30 days were significantly decreased (I4.98:!:1.86 ~g/g) and this effect continued up to day 45. Carotene levels of liver were not cffected with the doses of AF. Howewer, it was temporally lowered on the day 30. Vitamin A and carotene levels were alsa significantly decreasecl with feed intakc including 1000 ppb AF. The most lowered levels (14.72:t2.75 and 34.34:t8.56 ~g/dl, respeetively) were observed in this group. As a result, AF intake with feed had a different effect on vitamin A metabalism of broilcrs depenel on the dose and intake time. As a most effective dose, ı000 ppb AF intake with feed for 30-45 days were significantly lowered serum and liver vitamin A Ievels.
