Women’s Contraceptive Use and Preferences Following Postplacental, Early Postpartum, and Interval Intra Uterine Device Insertion in Turkey: A 10-year Follow-up Study

Abstract

Introduction: IUD was one of the most preferred and known, also potentially effective contraceptive for meeting women’s unmet contraceptive needs for long time.
Method: A total of 44 women were interviewed by telephone 10 years after the initial insertion of an intrauterine device as a retrospective cohort study.
Results: In the immediate post placental group and in the early postpartum group, the most frequently reported continuation period was 1 to 3 years. Most of the women (90.9%) were satisfied with the method. Common reasons for discontinuation were partial expulsion and desiring a pregnancy in the immediate post placental and early postpartum groups. Condom was the most frequently reported contraceptive choice at the 10 years follow up, across groups.
Discussion: Although has very small participants because of a long time period, this study is first long-term cohort 10 years follow-up study by comparing IUD insertion times, both in Turkey and in the world.
Conclusions and Recommendations: Further studies are needed to conduct monitoring with regular follow-up of contraceptive continuation, especially for postpartum intrauterine device insertions.

Türkiye’de Postplasental, Erken Postpartum ve İnterval Rahim İçi Araç Uygulanan Kadınların Kontraseptif Kullanımı ve Yöntem Tercihleri: 10 Yıllık İzlem Çalışması.

Abstract

Giriş: Rahim İçi Araç (RİA), kadınlar tarafından en çok terih edilen ve bilinen aynı zamanda karşılanmayan kontraseptif yöntem ihtiyacını karşılama poatansiyeli olan etkili bir yöntemlerden biridir.
Materyal ve metod: RİA uygulanan toplam 44 kadın, ilk uygulamadan 10 yıl sonrasında telefon görüşmesi ile izlenmiş, retrospektif kohort çalışması yapılmıştır.
Bulgular: Postplasental ve erken postpartum gruptaki kadınların çoğunnun RİA’ya devam etme süresi 1-3 yıldı. Kadınların çoğu (% 90.9) yöntemden memnun olduğunu belirtti. Postpalsental ve erken postpartum gruplarda RİA ya devam etmemenin en sık nedenleri, kısmi atılma ve gebelik isteği olmuştur. Gruplar arasında 10 yıllık takibin sonunda en sık tercih edillen kontraseptif yöntem, kondomdu.
Tartışma: Uzun izlem süresi sonunda ulaşılan kadın sayısı çok az olmasına karşın, bu çalışma ilk uzun süreli retrospektif kohort tipi izlem çalışmasıdır.
Sonuç: Özellikle postpartum RİA için olmak üzere, kontraseptif yöntem devamı konusunda daha fazla izlem çalışması yapılmasına ihtiyaç vardır.
