Abstract

Introduction and Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between dietary habits and sleep quality in shift workers.
Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with 150 male drivers working in Istanbul with an age range of 21-57. The data were collected with a questionnaire form applied by face to face interview method. In addition to demographic information, anthropometric measurements, physical activity levels and eating habits were questioned in the questionnaire. Body mass index (BMI) of the individuals was calculated, and sleep quality was evaluated with the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Results: The average body weight of the individuals is 90.6 ± kg, and the BMI of 51.1% is over 30 kg / m2. It was found that the rate of skipping meals was high (73.3%) and the sleep quality of 68.0% was poor. According to the PSQI evaluation, 34% of the individuals were found to have poor sleep quality. There was no significant difference between PSQI and BMI scores of individuals working in shifts (p> 0.05). It was found that drivers who consume high-calorie food during the shift to cope with sleep have lower sleep quality (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Due to shift work, drivers skip meals at a high rate and turn to unhealthy snacks to cope with sleep. Approximately one in three drivers has poor sleep quality. It is necessary to increase the sleep quality of these individuals, who play the most important role in the public transportation system in the largest city of our country, and to offer solutions for the nutritional problems they encounter.

Vardiyalı Çalışan Şoförlerde Beslenme Alışkanlığı ile Uyku Kalitesi Arasındaki İlişkinin Araştırılması

Year 2021, Volume: 4 Issue: 3, 145 - 153, 20.08.2021
