Fruit Characteristics of Some Hazelnut Varieties Grown in Azerbaijan

Abstract

Objective: Aim of this study was determination of fruit characteristics of ‘Atababa’, ‘Qızıl fındıq’, ‘Yaghli’ and ‘Saşaqlı’ hazelnut varieties grown in Zakatala and Kebele regions in the north of Azerbaijan. Materials and Methods: The fruits obtained from the harvest in 2021 and 2022 were dried in perforated bags and brought to the pomology laboratory of Ordu University Faculty of Agriculture (Ordu, Türkiye). The number of fruits per cluster, nut and kernels characterization, defective fruit characteristics and fat protein ratios were investigated. The results were analyzed in the JMP 13.0 statistical package program. According to the t test results, significant differences were determined at the 5% significance level by the Tukey multiple comparison method. Results: As a result of the research, the number of fruits in the cluster was found to be between 1.78 and 2.12, the nut weight was between 2.15 g and 1.48 g, the shell thickness was between 1.31 mm and 1.07 mm, and the kernel ratio was found to be between 47.26% and 32.27%. Fat ratios were found between 41% and 50.05%, and protein ratios were found between 15.55% and 25.30%. Conclusion: As a result of the study, it was determined that these 4 different hazelnut varieties (‘Atababa’, ‘Qızıl fındıq’, ‘Yaghli’ and ‘Saşaqlı’) grown in two different regions of Azerbaijan had low results in terms of fat and protein, which are quality parameters in hazelnuts, and when they were examined in terms of the kernel ratio, which is an important fruit characteristic, it was determined that the kernel ratios of the fruits were not at a sufficient level. It has been observed that the size of the fruits gives similar results to the size of some varieties grown in our country.
