8th Grade Students and Their Journey of Lgs: A Study on Parental Support

Abstract

In our country, the central exams applied in the transition to higher educational institutions are very important for the future of students. In this critical process, they expect to receive attention and support from their social environment. Parents constitute the first step of this expectation network. The aim of this study is to examine the expectations of 8th grade students who will take the High School Transition Examination (LGS) from their parents during the exam preparation process. The research was designed with a qualitative approach. The study examines student-parent relationships, types of parental support, and the effects of this support on students' exam preparation processes. The study group of the research is 10 students. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The collected data were evaluated by content analysis. According to the findings of the study, students expect emotional, motivational, academic and financial support from their parents during this period. Students expect an empathetic approach away from pressure and comparison from their parents during this period. Most of the students think that their parents do not understand the exam anxiety they experience during this period and that their parents' expectations about the exam create pressure on them. Based on this study, psychological counselors working in schools can conduct seminars and psychoeducation activities for the parents of students who are in the process of preparing for the LGS exam with the theme of parental support in the exam preparation process. The research is important in terms of revealing the LGS preparation process and the parent-child relationship in this.

8. Sınıf Öğrencileri ve Lgs Yolculuğu: Ebeveyn Desteği Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Ülkemizde üst eğitim kurumlarına geçişte uygulanan merkezi sınavlar öğrencilerin geleceği için oldukça önemlidir. Bu kritik süreçte sosyal çevrelerinden ilgi ve destek görmeyi beklemektedirler. Bu beklenti ağının ilk basamağını ebeveynler oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Liselere Geçiş Sınavı’na (LGS) girecek olacak 8.sınıf öğrencilerinin sınava hazırlık sürecinde ebeveynlerinden beklentilerinin incelenmesidir. Araştırma nitel yaklaşımda tasarlanmıştır. Araştırma, öğrenci-ebeveyn ilişkilerini, ebeveyn desteğinin türlerini ve bu desteğin öğrencilerin sınava hazırlık süreçlerine etkilerini ele almaktadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu 10 öğrencidir. Araştırmadaki veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Toplanan veriler içerik analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre öğrenciler bu süreçte ebeveynlerinden duygusal, motivasyonel, akademik ve maddi anlamda destek beklemektedirler. Öğrenciler bu dönemde ebeveynlerinden baskı ve kıyaslamadan uzak empatik bir yaklaşım beklemektedirler. Öğrencilerin çoğu bu süreçte yaşadıkları sınav kaygısını ebeveynlerinin anlamadıklarını ve ebeveynlerinin sınava ilişkin beklentilerinin üzerlerinde bir baskı yarattığını düşünmektedirler. Bu çalışmadan yola çıkarak okullar da çalışan psikolojik danışmanlar tarafından LGS’ ye hazırlık sürecinde olan öğrenci velilerine yönelik sınava hazırlık sürecinde ebeveyn desteği temalı seminerler ve psikoeğitim çalışmaları yapılabilir. Araştırma LGS hazırlık sürecini ve bu süreçte ebeveyn-çocuk ilişkisini öğrencilerin gözünden ortaya koyması açısından önemlidir.
