Research of Youth Gender Differences in Tobacco Consumption in Turkey

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine basic socio-economic and demographic factors effecting tobacco consumption by youth between the age of 15 and 25 according to gender differences by using data from Turkish Health Research study.   

Material and Method: First, chi-square tests of independence were conducted on male and female individuals in order to determine if there is a relationship between tobacco use and socio-economic and demographic factors of youth between the age of 15 and 25. After that, variables effecting tobacco consumption status for male and female individuals were determined using logistic regression model with socio-economic and demographic factors taken together. 

Findings: Status of covering expenses of health treatment, education level, marital status, monthly income, general health status, teeth brushing, body mass index, fruit consumption, exposure to violence, exposure to tobacco smoke at home, opinion on warning signs on packs of cigarettes and alcohol consumption have effect on tobacco consumption by male individuals. On the other hand, place of residence, status of covering expenses of health treatment, education level, marital status, general health status, body mass index, fruit consumption, exposure to tobacco smoke at home, survey year and alcohol consumption have effect on tobacco consumption by female individuals.

Conclusion: Factors effecting tobacco consumption differ for male and female individuals. There are more marginal effects of factors influencing tobacco consumption by male individuals comparing to female ones. The most important factor effecting tobacco consumption by both male and female individuals is to exposure to tobacco smoke at home.

Türkiye’de Gençlerin Tütün Kullanımında Cinsiyet Farklılıklarının Araştırılması

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Türkiye Sağlık Araştırması çalışmasının verileri kullanılarak 15-25 yaş arası gençlerin cinsiyet farklılıklarına göre tütün kullanımında etkili olan temel sosyo-ekonomik ve demografik faktörlerin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.   

Materyal ve metod: Öncelikle 15-25 yaş arası gençlerin tütün kullanımı ile sosyo-ekonomik ve demografik faktörler arasında ilişki olup olmadığının belirlenmesi amacıyla erkekler ve kadınlar için ki-kare bağımsızlık testleri yapılmıştır. Daha sonra sosyo-ekonomik ve demografik faktörler birlikte ele alınarak binary lojistik regresyon modeli ile erkekler ve kadınlar için tütün kullanma durumunu etkileyen değişkenler belirlenmiştir. 

Bulgular: Erkeklerin tütün kullanımında, tedavi masraflarının karşılanması durumu, eğitim düzeyi, medeni durum, aylık gelir, genel sağlık durumu, diş fırçalama, vücut kitle indeksi,   meyve yeme, şiddete maruz kalma, evde tütüne maruz kalma, sigara paketlerindeki uyarı etiketine bakış ve alkol kullanma etkili olmaktadır. Kadınların tütün kullanımında ise ikamet yeri, tedavi masraflarının karşılanması durumu, eğitim düzeyi, medeni durum, genel sağlık durumu, vücut kitle indeksi, meyve yeme, evde tütüne maruz kalma, anket yılı ve alkol kullanma etkili olmaktadır.    

Sonuç: Erkek ve kadınların tütün kullanımında etkili olan faktörler farklılık göstermektedir. Tütün kullanımında etkili olan faktörlerin marjinal etkileri erkeklerde kadınlara göre daha fazladır. Erkeklerde ve kadınlarda tütün kullanımını etkileyen en önemli faktör evde tütüne maruz kalmadır.
