Olive and Olive Oil Production in The World and Evaluation of Olives and Olive Oils in Türkiye in Terms of Geographical Indication Registration

Abstract

Türkiye is a significant producer of olives and olive oil. Due to Türkiye’s wide range of climate and geographical features, olives grown in different regions and the oils obtained from these olives have distinctive features. As a result, although there are 22 olive oils and 14 table olives with geographical indication registrations in our country, European Union Geographical Indication registrations have been received or applications have been made for 6 Turkish Olive Oils. This research aims to examine the distribution of olives and olive oils with geographical indications by province and registration years and some characteristics of olive oils registered in the European Union. Geographical indication registration can provide assurance both in protecting producer rights and in delivering authentic olives and/or olive oils to consumers. It is thought that our country has a large number of geographical indications, and this number will increase every year. Geographical indication registration should be seen not only as a distinctive document but also as an encouraging tool for the increase in quality and authentic olive and olive oil products. In this way, it is thought that product quality can be preserved in parallel with product diversity in the sector.

Dünyada Zeytin ve Zeytinyağı Üretimi ve Türkiye’deki Zeytinlerin ve Zeytinyağlarının Coğrafi İşaret Tescili Açısından Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Türkiye önemli bir zeytin ve zeytinyağı üreticisidir. Türkiye’nin geniş bir iklim ve coğrafi özellik çeşitliliğine sahip olması nedeniyle farklı bölgelerde yetiştirilen zeytinler ve bu zeytinlerden elde edilen yağlar ayırt edici özelliklere sahiptir. Bunun bir sonucu olarak ülkemizde coğrafi işaret tesciline sahip olan 22 zeytinyağının ve 14 adet sofralık zeytinin bulunmasına rağmen 6 adet Türk Zeytinyağı için Avrupa Birliği Coğrafi İşaret tescili alınmış veya başvurusu yapılmış durumdadır. Bu araştırmada coğrafi işarete sahip olan zeytinlerin ve zeytinyağlarının illere ve tescil yıllarına göre dağılımı ve Avrupa Birliği tarafında tescil edilen zeytinyağlarının bazı özellikleri irdelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Coğrafi işaret tescilinin hem üretici haklarının korunmasında hem de tüketicilere aslına uygun zeytin ve/veya zeytinyağının ulaştırılmasında güvence sağlayabilmektedir. Zeytin ve zeytinyağı özelinde ülkemizin çok sayıda coğrafi işarete sahip olduğu ve bunun her geçen yıl artacağı düşünülmektedir. Coğrafi işaret tescilinin yalnızca ayırt edici bir belge olarak değil aynı zamanda kaliteli ve aslına uygun zeytin ve zeytinyağı ürünlerinin artması teşvik edici bir araç olarak görülmelidir. Bu sayede sektörde ürün çeşitliliğine paralel olarak ürün kalitesinin de korunabileceği düşünülmektedir.
