Hemşirelik Öğrencileri İle Bir Metafor Analizi: Onkoloji Hemşiresi Olmak

Year 2022, Volume: 11 Issue: 1, 1 - 9, 28.02.2022

Abstract

Year 2022, Volume: 11 Issue: 1, 1 - 9, 28.02.2022

Abstract

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the perspective of nursing students on oncology nursing through metaphors. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted as descriptive and qualitative research with nursing students between 10 June and 10 July 2021. The data of the research were collected using the Introductory Information Form and the Semi-Structured Interview Form. Metaphors described according to the stages of metaphor analysis were analyzed. Results: Half of the nursing students were 21 years and above and most of them were women. It was determined that nearly half of the students' associated cancer with death, the majority of them had no experience of caring for cancer patients, and more than half of them wanted to be oncology nurses. The metaphors produced were grouped, and the themes of caring, supportive and trainer were created from the 11 metaphors obtained. A statistically significant difference was found between the students' desire to be oncology nurses and the themes (p=0.019). Conclusion: It was determined that the nursing students were aware of the metaphors they used and the caregiver, supportive and trainer roles of oncology nurses in quality and safe cancer care. The metaphor analysis used in this study is a tool that can be used in oncology nursing education, as well as revealing the students' perspectives on oncology nursing. The inferences obtained from the research can be suggested as an effective and guiding approach in developing a positive attitude towards oncology nursing.
