Determining Priorities of the Potential Reforestation Areas Using Geographical Information Systems with Special Reference to Kahta State Forest Administration

Abstract

This study was conducted to indentify the priority reforestation areas that mainly for sediment and erosion control in Kahta- Adıyaman forest management planning unit, which take part in the basin that feeds the Atatürk dam using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (UA) technologies. All the maps were digitalized using by Arc/Info 10.1TM software and digitalizing was conducted on the screen at precision of 1/1250–1/1500. The maps of treeless forest areas (OT), elevation zones, settlement areas and roads, slopes were prepared by a precision of 10×10 m and analized in subcompartment level. According to the results, each compartment was allocated a value between minimum of 5 and maximum of 25.  By grouping these values in itself, priority values of reforestation areas were determined for subcompartement and compartment level and presented for each treeless forest areas (OT) as tables and figures.
