Abstract

EFFECTIVENESS OF YOGA ON ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES: A META-ANALYSIS STUDY

Year 2024, , 30 - 39, 30.04.2024
https://doi.org/10.53445/batd.1392489

Abstract

Yoga is one of the oldest methods of self-development, which trains the mind and provides self-knowledge. Yoga is used in the management of various chronic diseases such as hypertension, asthma, obesity, neuromuscular diseases and psychiatric diseases. This study was conducted to reveal the effect of yoga on anxiety and depression in Type 2 diabetes patients by meta-analysis method. For this meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Scıence, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar and YÖK Thesis Center databases were searched in July-September 2023 without any year limitation. After the evaluations were made, 6 studies reporting results on the effectiveness of yoga on anxiety and depression in Type 2 diabetes patients were included in the analysis. Data were analyzed using meta-analysis and narrative method. In the meta-analysis, it was found that yoga was effective on anxiety and depression in patients with Type 2 diabetes (SMD: -0.513, 95% CI: lower limit -0.898 upper limit; -0.128; Z= -2.614, p = 0.009, I2= 83.561%). The available evidence suggests that yoga benefits adult patients with type 2 diabetes and is effective on the mental health of individuals. As a result of the study, it was determined that yoga reduced anxiety and depression symptoms in individuals with type 2 diabetes. In the meta-analysis based on the findings of these studies, it was found that the mean anxiety and depression scores of the yoga group in patients with type 2 diabetes were statistically significant and lower than the control group.
