Sunglasses awareness training using a sequential learning stations technique supported by webcam spectrometry

Abstract

Sunglasses are one of the most effective means of protecting the eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. However, previous studies indicate that public awareness of this issue remains insufficient. This study aims to examine the effect of a webcam spectrometry-supported Sequential Learning Stations Technique on students’ awareness of sunglasses use and ultraviolet light protection. During the awareness training, a webcam spectrometer which enables direct measurement and provides visually engaging demonstrations was employed, and instructional activities were structured based on the Sequential Learning Stations Technique. The study was conducted using a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design with a total of 96 students enrolled in the Child Development, Opticianry, and Dental Prosthetics Technology programs. The findings revealed that the awareness training helped students develop a health-oriented perspective toward the use of sunglasses, increased the rate of considering ultraviolet light protection levels when purchasing sunglasses, and improved their knowledge about ultraviolet light and visible light. Overall, the results suggest that short-term and low-cost instructional activities can be effective in promoting students’ health awareness.
