Bibliometric analysis of academic publications on tourism and local government

Abstract

There are many stakeholders that direct the development of the tourism sector. One of these stakeholders, and even the most important one, is local governments. In this context the purpose of this study is to determine the current situation and current trends by examining academic studies that include tourism and local government issues together with the bibliometric analysis method. In this context, academic studies in which the keywords “tourism” and “local government*” were used together were searched in the Web of Science database on August 23, 2023, without year limitation. After filtering on document type and language, 870 studies were included in the evaluation between 1994 and 2023. The obtained data were analyzed with the VOSviewer program. According to the findings; It has been determined that there is an increasing trend in the number of academic studies examining the relationship between tourism and local government, the most studies were done in 2021 and the most citations on this subject were given in 2022. While the studies on tourism and local government were mostly published in the field of “Accommodation, Leisure, Sports and Tourism”, the most published source was “Sustainability” journal. It has been determined that the most used keyword for tourism and local government is "tourism". The most collaborating author is “Xu, Honggang”. The country that cooperated the most was “China”. “Doğan Gürsoy” stands out as the most cited author. It has been revealed that “Tourism Management” journal is the most cited source. This study is the first bibliometric analysis focusing on tourism and local government and it is thought to contribute to the literature.

Turizm ve yerel yönetim konulu akademik yayınların bibliyometrik analizi

Abstract

Turizm sektörünün gelişimine yön veren birçok paydaş bulunmaktadır. Bu paydaşlardan biri hatta en önemlisi de yerel yönetimlerdir. Bu bağlamda bu çalışmanın amacı, turizm ve yerel yönetim konularının birlikte yer aldığı akademik çalışmaları bibliyometrik analiz yöntemi ile inceleyerek mevcut durumu ve güncel eğilimleri belirlemektir. Bu kapsamda 23 Ağustos 2023 tarihinde Web of Science veri tabanında yıl sınırlaması yapılmadan “tourism” and “local government*” anahtar kelimelerinin birlikte geçtiği akademik çalışmalar taranmıştır. Doküman türü ve dil konusunda filtreleme yapıldıktan sonra 1994 ile 2023 yılları arasında 870 çalışma değerlendirmeye dahil edilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler VOSviewer programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgulara göre; turizm ve yerel yönetim ilişkisini inceleyen akademik çalışmaların sayısında giderek artış eğilimi olduğu, en çok çalışmanın 2021 yılında yapıldığı ve bu konudaki en çok atıfın ise 2022 yılında verildiği tespit edilmiştir. Turizm ve yerel yönetim konusunda yapılan çalışmalar en çok “Konaklama Boş Zaman Spor Turizm” alanında yayımlanırken, en fazla yayın yapılan kaynak “Sustainability” dergisi olmuştur. Turizm ve yerel yönetim konusuna yönelik en çok kullanılan anahtar kelimenin “turizm” olduğu saptanmıştır. En çok iş birliği yapan yazar “Xu, Honggang” dır. En fazla iş birliği yapan ülke ise “Çin” olmuştur. “Doğan Gürsoy” en çok atıf alan yazar olarak ön plana çıkmaktadır. “Tourism Management” dergisinin en fazla atıf alan kaynak olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu çalışma turizm ve yerel yönetim konusuna odaklanan ilk bibliyometrik analiz olup, literatüre katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
