Difficulties in Organizing the Database of Idioms for Uzbek and Turkish Machine Translation Program

Abstract

According to the generally accepted view, idioms express a new meaning acquired by a few words beyond their basic meaning and are often considered as a syntactic whole that cannot be translated word for word. Idioms, which reflect our world of thought and cultural codes, have been derived to express a feeling and idea as a result of various events and situations that nations have experienced over many years. Therefore, they hold an important place in our vocabulary and carry traces of the semantic layers of the language. The high number of idioms in a language indicates the development of that language. When it comes to the translation of idioms, the cultures of the source and target language speakers must be taken into consideration. Without this care, a successful translation cannot be spoken of. Therefore, in order to perform a computer translation with a context-based approach, parallel idioms must be collected from the source and target languages. This article examines the structural state of idioms and the factors that form the basis for their new meanings. Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods have formed the basis for computer translation tools; and artificial intelligence has further increased the quality of translation. Computer translation tools may be inadequate in translating idioms; In some cases, semantic errors are observed. Particularly striking are the shortcomings in the appropriate use of idioms. In this article, the aforementioned deficiencies and semantic deviations were examined through Uzbek-Turkish idioms, the situations where translation tools are inadequate were tried to be shown and solutions were suggested with corresponding explanations reflecting the contex.

Özbekçe-Türkçe Bilgisayarlı Çeviri Programları için Deyimlerin Veri Tabanını Oluşturmada Karşılaşılan Güçlükler

Abstract

Genel kabul gören görüşe göre deyimler; birkaç sözcüğün temel anlamı dışında kazandığı yeni anlamı ifade eder ve çoğu kez kelimesi kelimesine çevrilemeyen söz dizimsel bir bütün olarak düşünülür. Düşünce dünyamızı ve kültürel özelliklerimizi yansıtan deyimler; ulusların uzun yıllar boyu deneyimlediği çeşitli olay ve durumların sonucunda bir duygu ve düşünceyi anlatmak amacıyla türetilmişlerdir. Bu nedenle söz varlığımız içinde önemli bir yer tutar ve dilin anlam katmanlarından izler taşır. Bir dildeki deyimlerin sayısının çokluğu, o dilin gelişmişliğini gösterir. Deyimlerin çevirisi söz konusu olduğunda, kaynak ve hedef dili konuşanların üyesi oldukları kültürlerin göz önüne alınması gerekir. Buna özen gösterilmediğinde başarılı bir çeviriden söz edilemez. Dolayısıyla bağlam temelli bir yaklaşımla bilgisayarlı bir çeviri yapılabilmesi için kaynak ve hedef diller arasında koşut deyimlerin toplanması gerekir. Bu makalede deyimlerin yapısal durumu ve yeni anlamları için temel oluşturan etkenler incelenmiştir. Doğal Dil İşleme (DDİ) yöntemleri, bilgisayarlı çeviri araçlarına temel oluşturmuş; yapay zekâ çevirinin kalitesini daha da arttırmıştır. Bilgisayarlı çeviri araçları, deyimleri çevirme konusunda yetersiz kalabilmekte; bazı durumlarda anlam bozuklukları görülmektedir. Özellikle deyimlerin yerinde kullanılması konusundaki eksikler dikkat çekicidir. Bu makalede, söz konusu eksiklik ve anlam sapmaları Özbekçe-Türkçe deyimler üzerinden incelenmiş, çeviri araçlarının yetersiz kaldığı durumlar gösterilmeye çalışılmış ve bağlamı yansıtan karşılık açıklamalar ile çözümle önerilmiştir.
