Bioeconomic Modeling Approach in Livestock Selection Programs

Abstract

Bioeconomics is an interdisciplinary field that aims to contribute to sustainable development goals by linking the production, utilization, and management of biological resources with their economic value. Within this framework, the livestock sector emerges as one of the key areas of application for bioeconomic approaches. Particularly in animal breeding and selection programs, identifying the economic significance of traits that drive genetic progress plays a crucial role in the rational formulation of breeding objectives. Evaluating genetic values not only based on their biological effects but also on their economic contributions facilitates the design of more effective and sustainable production systems. Bioeconomic modeling serves as a robust tool for analyzing the potential biological and economic outcomes of genetic and managerial improvements within production systems. These models mathematically represent the interactions among various components of the system, support decision-makers in strategic planning processes, and enable the simulation of uncertainties that may arise in the future. This review study comprehensively examines the theoretical foundations of bio-economic modelling approaches, their areas of application within livestock production systems, and particularly their role in selection programs, in light of the current literature. The findings indicate that bioeconomic models serve as a strategic tool in livestock production by enhancing economic efficiency, optimizing resource use, and contributing significantly to the achievement of sustainability goals.
