Novel Fertility-Related Phenotypic Traits in Dairy Cattle

Abstract

This review addresses fertility-related phenotypic traits developed to improve reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle. Traditional fertility parameters have shown limited success in genetic selection programs due to their low heritability and high susceptibility to environmental factors. Therefore, novel traits that more accurately reflect the biological basis of fertility and exhibit moderate to high heritability have gained increasing attention. In this context, phenotypes such as antral follicle count (AFC), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), ovarian size, uterine position score (UPS), anogenital distance (AGD), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), progesterone-based measurements, and estrus-related behaviors are examined in detail. The relationships of these traits with fertility, as well as their potential for use in genetic selection programs, are evaluated. The present review indicates that these novel fertility phenotypes can more effectively reveal genetic variation among individuals and contribute significantly to improving reproductive efficiency at the herd level. However, further research is needed to enhance their applicability under field conditions and their integration into selection programs.
