Hafıza ve Kimlik Arasında: Romantizm Akımının Arşiv Anlayışına Etkisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Romantizm akımının arşiv kuramı ve uygulamaları üzerindeki etkilerini tarihsel, kuramsal ve kültürel bir çerçevede ele almaktadır. 18. yüzyılın sonlarında Aydınlanma’nın akıl merkezli yaklaşımına bir tepki olarak doğan Roman3 tizm; bireyselliği, estetik duyarlılığı, doğaya ve geçmişe duyulan özlemi öne çıkararak yalnızca sanat ve edebiyatı değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal bellek yapıları ile arşiv düşüncesini de derinden etkilemiştir. Bu bağlamda belgeler, yalnızca idari kayıtlar değil; kimlik, duygu ve kültürel anlam taşıyan varlıklar olarak yeniden konumlandırılmıştır. Bu araştırma karşılaştırmalı bir kuramsal analiz yöntemiyle, özellikle Fransa, Almanya, İngiltere, Belçika ve İtalya’daki arşiv kurumlarının biçimlenişinde romantik tarih anlayışının oynadığı rolü ülke örnekleri üzerinden değerlendirmektedir. Aynı zamanda, bu analiz günümüz arşiv kuramlarında sıkça tartışılan hafıza, kimlik, anlatı ve duygu odaklı yaklaşımların, romantik düşüncenin epistemolojik mirasıyla nasıl ilişkilendirildiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Terry Cook, Helen MacNeil ve Michelle Cifor gibi çağdaş kuramcıların görüşleri doğrultusunda, Romantizm’in yalnızca estetik bir eğilim değil; arşivlerin kültürel ve duygusal boyut3 larını açıklamada önemli bir düşünsel zemin sunduğu ileri sürülmektedir. Literatürde sınırlı biçimde ele alınan bu ilişkiyi sistematik olarak inceleyen çalışma, arşivleri yalnızca teknik yapılar olarak değil; aynı zamanda toplumsal hafızanın, kimliğin ve duygunun kesişiminde yer alan anlam üretim mekânları olarak yeniden düşünmeye katkı sunmaktadır

Between Memory and Identity: The Impact of Romanticism on Archival Thought

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Romantic movement on archival theory and practice from historical, theoretical, and cultural perspectives. Emerging in the late 18th century as a reaction against the Enlightenment’s rationalist and universalist paradigm, Romanticism emphasised individuality, aesthetic sensibility, and a nostalgic attachment to nature and the past. These values influenced not only art and literature but also transformed cultural memory structures and archival consciousness. In this context, records came to be understood not merely as administrative records but as carriers of identity, emotion, and cultural meaning. Employing a comparative theoretical analysis, this study examines how Romantic historical consciousness shaped the development of archival institutions in countries such as France, Germany, England, Belgium, and Italy. It also investigates how contemporary archival theories—centred on memory, identity, narrative, and affect—are epistemologically rooted in Romantic thought. Drawing on the perspectives of key archival theorists such as Terry Cook, Helen MacNeil, and Michelle Cifor, the paper argues that Romanticism offers more than an aesthetic orientation; it provides a conceptual foundation for rethinking the emotional and cultural dimensions of archives. By systematically addressing a relationship that has been rarely explored in the literature, this study contributes to a reimagining of archives not as merely technical systems but as meaning3making spaces situated at the intersection of memory, identity, and affect.
