On “Closed E” in the Words of Arabic-Persian Origin in Nehcü’l-Ferādis
Abstract
In the ancient text studies in Turkey, consonants and a few long vowels (ā, i, ū,
ō) are marked, but “closed e” sounds are not indicated in the transcription words of
Arabic-Persian origin. Different letters and signs seen in these are evaluated through
the classical form of the word and associated with spelling error. However, it is
necessary to evaluate the borrowed words in a synonymous point of view so that the
studies carried out on the history of phonetics can be more overreaching.
In this article, “closed e” in the Arabic quotations in Nehcü’l-Ferādis has been
studied on the basis of the signs which are not compatible to the classical form and
which have phonetical value. In the study carried out within the scope of the connecting
link of spelling-phonetics, the words whose first vowels are written with “fathah+ya”,
the words whose first letter is with kasrah in the source or mediating language but
marked with “fathah” in NF, the words which have “both signs” together in their
first letter and the ones whose first letter is marked as “fathah+ya+cazm” have been
discussed.
It has been seen that fifteen of the identified twenty-eight words fit in the group
of “indeterminate e” (bė̄-ġāyet, bė̄-ḫaber, bė̄-hūş, bė̄-meze, bė̄-namāz, bė̄-nihāyet;
bė̄hūde, bė̄zār, dė̄v, dė̄vāne, hė̄ç, pė̄şe, tė̄z; ė̄min), twenty-three of them were written as
the form which can be read through the sound /ė/ (cėlve, dėhḳān, dėrem, ėfṭār, ėḥyā,
fėrişte; Bėsṭāmi, ʿėyādet; ėḥrām, Ėḳlimā, ʿėlm; bėyʿet, vėyrān).
Moreover, the subject was studied with a diachronic point of view and in what form
the words mentioned in this precious work of Khorezm Turkic survive was presented
to the attention of the people.
