Investigation of Wrestlers' Sleeping Behaviors During Ramadan

Year 2025, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 24 - 31

Abstract

Ramadan fasting is a form of worship that millions of Muslims around the world have to do due to their beliefs. Muslims fast during Ramadan, which they call holy and lasts approximately 30 days every year. Therefore, there are significant changes in sleep patterns, some lifestyles and eating habits. During the fast held in Ramdan, people remain hungry and thirsty for approximately 14 hours. The fast is started by eating at a certain time of the night (suhoor) and completed by eating again in the evening after a 14-hour break (iftar). In this case, the normal sleep pattern may be disrupted. The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep patterns of wrestlers during Ramadan. 320 wrestlers training in wrestling clubs in Türkiye were included in the study. The Athlete Sleep Pattern Questionnaire (ASPQ), which was translated into Turkish and validated and reliable by Darendeli et al. (2019), was used to determine the sleep patterns of those participating in the study. The questionnaire was applied to the wrestlers. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS 26 Windows program as percentage, frequency and average. It was determined that 92.8% of the participants were male and 67.2% were freestyle wrestlers. It was determined that 89.7% of the participants fasted during Ramadan and 76.6% trained before iftar. The total ASPQ score was 38.3. According to the ASPQ score average, it was concluded that Ramadan did not negatively affect the wrestlers' sleep behavior.

Güreşçilerin Ramazan Ayındaki Uyku Davranışlarının İncelenmesi

Year 2025, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 24 - 31

Abstract

Ramazan orucu, dünyadaki milyonlarca müslümanın inançlarından dolayı yapmak durumunda oldukları bir ibadet şeklidir. İslam dinine inananlar her yıl yaklaşık 30 gün devam eden kutsal olarak adlandırdıkları Ramazan boyunca oruç tutarlar. Bundan dolayı uyku düzeni, bazı yaşam alışkanlıkları ve beslenme alışkanlıklarında belirgin değişiklikler olmaktadır. Ramazanda tutulan oruçta kişiler yaklaşık 14 saat aç ve susuz kalırlar. Oruca gecenin belli saatinde yemek yiyerek başlanır (sahur), 14 saat aradan sonra akşam saatinde tekrar yemek yiyerek (iftar) tamamlanır. Bu durumda normal zamandaki uyku düzeni bozulabilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı güreşçilerin Ramazan boyunca uyku davranışlarını değerlendirmektir. Çalışmaya Türkiye’deki güreş kulüplerinde antrenmanlara devam eden 320 güreşçi katılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılanların uyku davranışlarını belirlemek amacıyla Darendeli vd., (2019) tarafından Türkçeye uyarlanarak geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışması yapılmış olan Sporcu Uyku Davranış Anketi (SUDA) kullanılmış ve anket toplam toplam 320 güreşçiye uygulanmıştır. Toplanan veriler SPSS 26 Windows programında yüzde, frekans, ortalama olarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmaya dahil olanların %92,8’inin erkek, %67,2’sinin serbest stil güreş yapanlar olduğu belirlenmiştir. Katılımcıların %89,7’sinin Ramazan ayında oruç tuttuğu, %76,6’sının iftardan önce antrenman yaptığı tespit edilmiştir. SUDA toplam puanı 38,3’tür. SUDA puan ortalamasına göre Ramazan ayının güreşçilerin uyku davranışlarını olumsuz etkilemediği sonucuna varılmıştır.
