CHARACTERS’ IMPACT on REALITY IN DOCUMENTARY FILMS

Abstract

The extent to which documentary cinema can influence social life and to what extent it can represent the subject it deals with has been discussed in the literature for many years. A significant part of these discussions was based on the relationship between documentary cinema and reality, and it was frequently emphasised that the actuality that can exist in documentary cinema can only be interpreted by the director. The discussion of reality in documentary films is largely based on the ‘director's reality’ and the limitations of technical possibilities in filmmaking. This study aims to contribute to the discussions mentioned above through character-driven documentaries by analysing how the people who are the subjects of the documentary can affect the reality of the documentary. In line with this purpose, the purposeful sampling method was adopted in the study and in-depth interviews were conducted with the characters who are the subjects of the documentary selected for the study. The documentary Life Sometimes (Hayat Bazen, 2017), a character-oriented and observational study, was chosen as a sample for the study. The director followed the two main characters for 2.5 years during the film production process, and it aimed to create a discussion environment about the practices of urban life and rural life through the characters' daily lives. As a result of this study, it was concluded that the characters can affect reality along with all other factors.

BELGESEL FİLMLERDE KARAKTERLERİN ANLATIYA ETKİSİ: HAYAT BAZEN BELGESEL ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract

Belgesel sinemanın toplumsal hayata olan etkisi veya ele aldığı konuyu ne derece temsil edebileceği konusu üzerine yürütülmekte olan tartışmalar uzun yıllardan bu yana süregelmektedir. Bu tartışmaların çok önemli bir bölümü belgesel sinemanın gerçeklik ile olan ilişkisi üzerinden temellendirilmiş, belgesel sinemada var olabilecek gerçekliğin ise çok büyük oranda “yönetmen tarafından yorumlanmış bir gerçeklik” olabileceğine sıklıkla vurgu yapılmıştır. Belgesel filmlerdeki gerçeklik tartışması çoğunlukla “yönetmenin gerçekliği” ve film yapım sürecindeki teknik olanakların sınırlamaları üzerinden yürütülmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı bahsi geçen tartışmalara karakter odaklı belgeseller üzerinden, filmin öznesi konumundaki kişilerin belgeselin gerçekliğini ne yönde etkileyebileceğini irdeleyerek katkı sağlamaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda çalışmada amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi benimsenmiş ve çalışma için seçilen belgeselin öznesi durumundaki karakterler ile derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmaya örneklem olarak ise karakter odaklı ve gözlemsel bir belgesel olan Hayat Bazen (Life Sometimes, 2017) isimli belgesel film seçilmiştir. Belgeselin öznesi konumundaki iki ana karakter belgeselin yapım sürecinde 2,5 yıl süre ile izlenmiş, karakterlerin gündelik yaşamları üzerinden kent yaşamı ile kırsal yaşamın pratiklerine ilişkin bir tartışma ortamının yaratılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın sonucunda belgeselin öznesi konumundaki karakterlerin, diğer bütün etkenler ile birlikte tartışılan konu özelindeki gerçekliğe etki edebileceği sonucu çıkarılmıştır.
