A Research on Relationship on R&D Investments, High-Tech Product Export and Economic Growth: Selected OECD Countries

Abstract

As a result of developments in science and technology, the determinants of economic growth have also changed. Accordingly, factors such as technology, education, human capital and knowledge have started to be needed to increase economic growth. New growth models have emerged to explain this situation. According to these models, both the quality and quantity of the goods and services will increase with the technical knowledge resulting from R&D activities. This increase in production will encourage exports and cause an increase in income in the treasury. In this study, the relationship between R&D investments, high-tech product exports (ICT) and economic growth in OECD countries selected for the period of 1996-2017 is tested by panel data analysis. As a result of the analysis, one-way causality relationship was determined from R&D investments to economic growth. In addition, it is concluded that there is a bilateral causality relationship between economic growth and ICT and R&D investments and ICT.

AR-Ge Yatırımları Yüksek Teknolojili Ürün İhracatı Ekonomik Büyüme İlişkisi Üzerine Bir İnceleme: Seçilmiş OECD Ülkeleri

Öz

Bilim ve teknolojide yaşanan gelişmeler sonucunda ekonomik büyümenin belirleyicileri de değişmiştir. Buna göre ekonomik büyümenin artırılması için teknoloji, eğitim, beşeri sermaye, bilgi gibi faktörlere ihtiyaç duyulmaya başlanmıştır. Bu durumu açıklamak üzere yeni büyüme modelleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu modellere göre AR-GE faaliyetleri sonucunda meydana gelen teknik bilgi ile mal ve hizmetlerin hem niteliği hem de niceliği artacaktır. Meydana gelen bu üretim artışı ihracatı teşvik ederek hazinede gelir artışına neden olacaktır. Bu çalışmada 1996- 2017 dönemi için seçilmiş OECD ülkelerinde AR-GE yatırımları, yüksek teknolojili ürün ihracatı ve ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişki panel veri analizi ile test edilmektedir. Analiz sonucunda AR-GE yatırımlarından ekonomik büyümeye doğru tek yönlü nedensellik ilişkisi tespit edilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra ekonomik büyüme ile yüksek teknolojili ürün ihracatı ve AR-GE yatırımları ile yüksek teknolojili ürün ihracatı arasında çift yönlü nedensellik ilişkisi olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
