Clergy has been separated from the rest of the society from the
start of the first ages where the religious identities had an effect on the social
status. In this study, transition into clergy from the Ottoman Orthodox Christian
community and the change that this transition brought will be examined
through two sample stories from Chios Island. Between the years of 1566-
1912 for a period of 346 years the island community was ruled under full
domination of Ottoman Empire and the inner workings of traditional structures
have survived as they had been recorded in the community registers. In
this article, the registers of Kalamoti/Chios which is one of the mastic villages
of the island have been studied and from the information gathered from
these registers, the transition into clergy class and its effects are analyzed.
