It can be said that the phenomenon of state in the West developed in the Ancient Greek Period and until the Enlightenment, the state was valued both ontologically and epistemologically as a higher purpose with priority over the individual. This study aims to examine how the origin and changes of the state in the West from the Ancient Greek Period to the Enlightenment Period affected the approaches to human nature and the casuality of the political roles attributed to the individual with the hermeneutic method. In this respect, in the conclusion, the phases of state-individual relations in the aforementioned historical interval and the kind of interaction they have undergone are interpreted through Hegel’s concepts of moralität and sittlichkeit.
