Structuring the Perception Through Media: The US and the UK Press on 2015 Turkish Parliamentary Elections
Abstract
In 2015, Turkey went to the polls for the general parliamentary election twice due to the failure of the first election to form a coalition government. In both elections, the news pieces were evaluated from different perspectives by the US and UK press. Although the press consider the 7th June elections as the victory of democracy, the same press announced the 1st November election as the victory of Erdogan. Considering the fact that the contents and formats of the news in the media are affected by the relations of different countries, the news pieces reported by the US and the UK press in the very first two days after the elections were analyzed and contextualized to elucidate complex and ambiguous press representations of 2015 Turkish elections through the frequency and keyword analyses, and the tools of corpusassisted discourse analysis.
