Türkçe’nin ‘Banyo’ Karşılığında Bilinen İlk Sözcüğü: Sukıngu

Year 2005, Issue: 34, 83 - 90, 01.06.2005

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Juten Oda tarafından yayımlanan “New Fragments of the Budhist Uighur Text Säkiz yükmäk yaruq” adlı makalede görülen sukıngu sözcüğü üzerinde durulacaktır.

“Sukingu” the First Word Known as Bathroom in Turkish

Year 2005, Issue: 34, 83 - 90, 01.06.2005

Abstract

In the introdu In this study, it will be dwelled on the word sukıngu that takes place in the article “New Fragments of
the Budist Uighur Text Sekiz yükmek yaruk” published by Juten Oda. According to Oda sukıngı is derivated from suk- or
sok- “to thrust into” and it means “winter dwelling”. Marcel Erdal disagrees this opinion. Erdal claims that it is derivated from sogın- “cool themselves” and he transcribes this word as sogıngu means “refreshing room for the summer”. I think that it is derivated from sukın- that means “to wash oneself” in Old Turkish. According to me it is more suitable to mean sukıngu derivated from this verbal stem as “bathroom” for morphology, semantics and also Turkish house culture.
