The Effect of Varroa Mite on Honey Bee Health and Development of Control Strategies Against Varroa

Today, around 25 virus species are known to infect honey bees (Apis mellifera). As a result of the transmission of these viruses to honey bees in different ways, some of them show high pathogenicity, while a significant part of them are found in colonies without causing disease (hidden), but under some special conditions, they cause disease symptoms and losses. Therefore, in the pathogenesis of honey bee viruses, virus, host (life stage of the honey bee) and environmental factors must be considered together. In the transmission of these viruses to honey bees, the presence of the varroa mite, which is a honey bee parasite, and its infestation rate are important for colony continuity in honey bee colonies. Therefore, it is of great importance to conduct varroa infestation monitoring tests and implement control strategies for bee and colony health of honey bee colonies. This article focuses on varroa mite infestation monitoring and control strategies, which are important for honey bee colony management and colony continuity.
