Abstract

Review of Entomopathogenic Microsporidia Biodiversity in the Trabzon Region, Turkey Hilal YILDIRIM 1, Çağrı BEKİRCAN2 Onur TOSUN3 ORCID: 0000-0002-6072-5543;0000-0002-5968-7359;0000-0002-6763-5671 1 Department of the Crop and Animal Production, Espiye Vocational School, Giresun University, Giresun, Türkiye 2 Department of the Chemistry and Chemical Processing Technology, Maçka Vocational School, Karadeniz Technical University, Trabzon, Türkiye 3 Department of the Veterinary Medicine, Maçka Vocational School, Karadeniz Technical University, Trabzon, Türkiye Abstract Purpose: Entomopathogenic microsporidia members are obligate intracellular parasites. They play an effective role of in the biological control of insect pest. In resent years, there has been increasing interest in biological pest control using entomopathogenic microsporidia as an alternative to chemical control methods. Trabzon region has a rich ecosystem with its coastal areas, mountainous regions, high plateaus, forests, streams, and wildlife. The main factor contributing to biodiversity is the the structure of the ecosystem. This rich biodiversity, both flora and fauna, has need to documented the biodiversity of entomopathogenic microsporidia in the region. To date, there is no study has been conducted to list entomopathogenic microsporidia in Trabzon province. In this study, it was aimed to reveal microsporidia biodiversity that have been recorded from Trabzon region to date. Method: Recently published articles about entomopathogenic microsporidium in Turkey especially from Trabzon city and literature information were taken as basis in the preparation of this article Findings: To date, numerous microsporidia have been recorded from orders with high species diversity in the Trabzon region, such as Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, and Coleoptera. While some of these have been identified in beneficial insects, such as bees and predatory species, the majority have been recorded from insect pests of economically important plants. In addition, various studies have emphasized the effects of geographical structure and climatic conditions on biodiversity. In this context, the diversity of entomopathogenic microsporidia in the Trabzon region has been discussed by considering the topographical structure. Conclusion: To date, the entomopathogenic microspores recorded from both usefull and harmful insects in Trabzon provide evidence of the wide pathogen diversity in the region. At the same time, they indicate the significant potential for furter research in the area. Due to its geographical characteristics, Trabzon province still has unexplored areas in terms of entomopathogenic microsporidium diversity.Studies show that Trabzon is a very rich and virgin region in terms of entomopathogenic microsporidia.
