Problems and their solutions in the pickling cucumbers growing areas in the Aegean region: the implementation of the pests and phytotoxicity levels of some insecticides used.

Abstract

Investigations were carried out in the areas where cucumber is grown for pickling in Aegean Region in 1990. A total of thirty five cucumber fields at three different locations were chosen in order to determine the problems arising. These fields were checked three times in the stages of seeding, flowering and harvesting periods, respectively. As a result , Levina, Fancipak and Regal  were found to be the most widely used species as under polyethylene covers tubes or open space in the places where early vegetable system in used. Delia platura, Thrips tabaci, Tetranchycus spp and Agrotis spp. were found to be the most harmful species. Another finding was the fact that the growers need to be informed on the trained on the pesticides and their dosage rates which have been used against these pests. On the other hand, the pesticides(three dose levels of Endosulfan 360g/l, Trichlorphon 80SP, Chlopyrifos- ethyl 25 and Carbofuran 5) used against the soil pests were tested against the phytotoxicity standpoint on Levina, Fancipak and Regal varieties. For this purpose an experiment was set up in flower- posts. By taking each pot a plot in which 10 seeds were sown, spray application was performed one day before sowing. After the procedure, percentage of plant growth, leafing and developing were written down, As a result of the test, insecticides applied showed no phytotoxicity and caused no negative effect from the growing standpoint. Although Dipterex 80 SP and Pyrinex 25 WP had showed some dormancy on the growth of the plants, this case turned to the normal manner eventually.
