Studies on the protected bean pests, their natural enemies and their population developments in İzmir province.
Abstract
The studies have been carried out on the population development of pests and their natural enemies on protected beans in 1998 in İzmir (Bornova and Güzelbahçe) Province of Turkey. Tetranychus urticae Koch. (Acarina:Tetranychidae) and Aphis fabae Scob. (Hom.: Aphididae) were determined as the major pests, whereas Bemisia tabaci Gern (Hom.:Aleyrodidae), Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard(Dip.:Agromyzidae), Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thys.:Thripidae) and Asymmetrasca decedens Paoli, Empoasca decipiens Paoli (Hom.:Cicadellidaae) were found as the secondary pests. The population of T.urticae and A.fabae increased towards the end of the season and plants were wilted because of the damage of these pests. The natural enemies become insufficient due to the rapid increase of the pests populations. The parasitism occurred at very low larval population density and suppressed L.huidobrensis population. B.tabaci, T.tabaci and Cicadellidae populations densities remained at a very low level owing to the predators activities. It was found that, Chrysoperla carnea (Steph.) (Neur.:Chrysopidae), Stethorus spp., Scymnus spp. (Col.: Coccinellidae), Typhlodromus pyri (Scheuten) (Acarina:Phytoseiidae) and Scolothrips longicornis Priesner (Thys.:Thripidae) were effective on T.urticae. Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rond) (Dip.:Cecidomyiidae), Coccinella septempunctata (L.), Adonia spp. (Col.: Coccinellidae)and C.carnea were effective on A.fabae. Macrolophus caliginosus (Wgn.) (Het.: Miridae) also suppressed the B.tabaci population.
