The relation between the biology of Aelia rostrata and wheat phenology in Central Anatolia.

Abstract

The relation between the biology of Aelia rostrata Boh. and wheat phenology was investigated during the studies carried out in Central Anatolia in 1984-1991. The overwintering adults migrate from overwintering area to the planes while the wheat is at the end of tillering or at the beginning of heading period. The adults continue the development by feeding on the cereal up to harvest. The newly emerging adults from these insects are seen in the fields towards the end of June, the beginning of July when the wheats are at the milky or ripening period. And so they have a chance for feeding until third week of July when the harvesting-treching machines. But because of the stepped development of the biology which begins with the immigration from the overwintered areas to planes, the youngest nymph stages(3-5. instar nymph) though in small numbers, can also be seen in the fields. So the insect die during harvest because of the harvesting-threshing machines. This ratio was found as 24.4% in 1984. The insects taken to the stores with the harvested crop, died when the time passed.
