Researches on the side effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) applications on citrus mealybug[Planococcus citri(Risso) (Hom.:Pseudococcidae)] and some of its natural enemies.

Abstract

Gibberellic acid is used to increase the forming of fruits, to decrease the shedding of fruits in june and to prevent the shedding of fruits before harvest time in citrus groves. In this study, the side effects of three different usages of Gibberellic acid (20 ppm GA3, 200 ppm Agrowett (AW) and 20 ppm GA3+200 ppm AW) against citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso) and its predator, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Muls. (Col.:Coccinellidae) and it's parasitoid Leptomastix dactylopii How. (Hym.:Encyrtidae) which are used for its biological control were determined in the laboratory. GA3 character didn't have any preventive effect on the hatching of P. citri eggs and infestation ability of the nymphs. In addition it didn't have any toxic effect on 2. and 3. nymph stages of P. citri (Table 1, 2, 3). But AW and GA3+AW characters prevented the hatching P. citri eggs 12 and 20%(Table 1), and the infestation ability of 2 and 3. nymph stage 17.3 % and %19.7 (Table 2), respectively. And also when these two compounds were sprayed on the mealybug nymphs they made 16.8%-17.8% toxic effect (Table 3). None of the three characters (GA3, AW, GA3+AW) affected the hatching of C. montrouzieri eggs and its adults contactly nor the parasitation rate of L.dacylopii taking into account of IOBC classification for beneficials.
