Bioecology of Bembecia scopigera (Scopoli) (Lep.:Sesiidae) pest of sainfoin in Erzurum.
Abstract
Sainfoin is an important forage crop in Erzurum. This study was conducted o determine biology, infestation rates and natural enemies of Bembecia scopigera (Scopoli), one of the main pests of sainfoin in the region, during 1994-1996. The biology of insect was investigated in laboratory and under natural conditions, and infestation rates in sainfoin fields were determined in Erzurum and districts of Aşkale, Ilıca, Pasinler and Tortum. The insect overwintered in the roots of sainfoin in cocoon in all larval stages except first stage. The larvae started feeding from mid April. The emergence of first adult from pupae was at the end of June. The first eggs were laid at the beginning of July. After 10-14 days, hatching larvae started feeding, entering into crowns through cracks, split and buds on plant, and overwintered starting at the end of September. Thus, it was observed that B.scopigera gave one generation in a year in Erzurum ecological conditions. In addition, the growing periods of different biological stages of the insect were determined. Infestation rates in Center, Aşkale, Ilıca, Pasinler and Tortum were 17.64, 1.53, 1.79, 4.05 and 5.23 %, respectively with an average of 6.05 %. Two natural enemies were recorded belonging to the family of Braconidae (Hym.). Among these, Bracon(=Lucobracon) grandiceps Thomson (Braconinae) as a larvae parasitoid and Ascogaster gonocephala Wesmeal (Cheloninae) in larvae-pupae parasitoid with effectiveness of 6.09 and 7.0%, respectively. Beauveria sp. and Fusarium sp. were also isolated from infected larvae (2-3 %).
