Determination of flight period of an oak pest, the Green oak tortrix [Tortrix viridana L. (Lep.: Tortricidae)] at various elevations in Çankırı (İndağı)
Abstract
This study in carried out in 6 sample plots in order to determine the relationship between the flight period of adult males of Tortrix viridana L. (Lepidopera: Tortricidae) which is well-known to damage oak forests in Çankırı (İndağı) and the meteorological data in 2003 and 2004. The flight period of the adults of T.viridana was determined via species specific pheromone traps.
The meteorological data obtained from Ilgaz Meteorology Station were interpolated to study area before evaluating the relationship with the flight period of T.viridana.
According to the evaluation data, T.viridana adults were determined to emerge when the mean air temperature was 20°C and the humidity was 52% in 2003 (the first week of June), and the mean air temperature was 15-17°C and the humidity was 55-73% in 2004 (the second week of June).
As the results of this study, it was determined that the emergence of adult moths were begun with the first or the second week of June when the mean air temperature exceeds 16°C, adult flights continued about 22-35 days, and the intense flights were occurred at the second half of June when the air temperature was between 14.0-23.3°C and this period lasted relatively short (one or two weeks). It was concluded as a result of this first study that the flight period of T.viridana could be monitored via specific pheromone traps in Turkey.
