Determination of pathogens causing damping-off and their pathogenicity in tomato seedbeds in Ankara (Ayaş, Beypazarı and Nallıhan districts) province
Abstract
This research was carried out for determination of pathogens causing damping-off and their pathogenicity in tomato seedbeds in Ankara province (Ayaş, Beypazarı and Nallıhan districts) in 2003. Two hundred eleven samples of tomato seedlings, thought to be infected with damping off were collected from 42 seedbeds. Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, Alternaria spp. and Aspergillus spp. were isolated from all collected tomato seddlings. Fusarium spp., Pythium spp., R. solani and Aspergillus spp. were subjected to pre-pathogenicity test and disease severity and effects on emergence were determined in pot experiment. Consequently, the results revealed that Pythium spp., R. solani and Fusarium spp. were important pathogens causing damping-off in tomato seedlings in the region. While Fusarium spp. were found to be the most widespread pathogen, Pythium spp. were the most virulence pathogen. Meanwhile, although R. solani was not so widespread pathogen, its pathogenicity was found to be high.
