Predatory mite fauna in Aegean vineyards

Abstract

This study was carried out between 1997-2004 in vineyard areas in Manisa, İzmir, Denizli, Muğla and Çanakkale (Bozcaada) provinces of the Aegean region to determine biological control possibilities against phytophagous mites.
Sampling was conducted from May to October. Most of the vineyards were sampled three times during the growing season and 50 leaves were collected randomly in each vineyard.
Colomerus vitis (Pagenstecher) and Calepitrimerus vitis (Nalepa)were determined the most widespread phytophagous mites at high population densities. Tetranychus urticae Koch and Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisd.) were widespread phytophagous mites at low population densities. Tenuipalpus granati Sayed, Bryobia rubrioculus Scheuten and Brevipalpus lewisi Mc Gregor were found only locally.
Furthermore, a total of 13 predatory mites species were determined. These were Typhlodromus perbibus Wainstein & Arutunjan, Anthoseius tranquillus (Livschitz et Kuznetsov), Euseius finlandicus (Oudemans), Paraseiulus soleiger (Ribaga), P. talbii Athias-Henriot, Typhlodromus tiliae (Oudemans) and Phytoseiulus plumifer (Ribaga) belonging to the Phytoseiidae family; Zetzellia mali (Ewing) and Agistemus terminalis (Quayle) belonging to the Stigmaeidae family; Pronematus ubiquitus (Berlese), Tydeus caudatus (Dugès) and T. californicus (Banks) belonging to the Tydeidae and Anystis baccarum (L.) to the Anystidae families. Typhlodromus perbibus was the predominant peradatory mite on Seedless Sultana vineyards and P. plumifer was determined the predominat species in seeded varieties.
