The effect of fluorescent Pseudomonads on damping-off of tomato seedlings caused by <em>Pythium deliense</em>
Abstract
Damping-off is a common disease causing seedling losses. Although fungicides have shown promising results in controlling the damping-off disease, phytotoxicity and fungicide residues are major problems leading to environmental pollution and human health hazards. In this research, biological control studies of damping-off of tomato caused by Pythium deliense were conducted by using fluorescent pseudomonads. Tomato seeds were coated with seventy isolates of fluorescent Pseudomonads isolated from tomato rhizosphere and were evaluated for their ability to control tomato damping-off caused by P. deliense in greenhouse conditions. Four isolates were found to be effective in reducing the damping-off incidence in tomato and showed above 50% efficacies in controlling damping-off. In addition, the most effectively isolate was found as 11fp (61,02 %). Isomaltes named 44fp (%59,12), 10fp (%53,17) and 47fp (%51,45) fallowed 11fp isolate. The manner of mechanism of antagonistic effect was further tested ın vitro conditions.
