The efficacy of “Rhyfer<sup>®</sup>â€? pheromone against Red palm weevil [<em>Rhynchophorus ferrugineus</em> (Olivier) (Col.: Curculionidae)] and adult flight activity in Antalya

The efficacy of “Rhyfer<sup>®</sup>â€? pheromone against Red palm weevil [<em>Rhynchophorus ferrugineus</em> (Olivier) (Col.: Curculionidae)] and adult flight activity in Antalya

Abstract

In this study, the biological efficacy of “Rhyfer®â€? pheromone + Scandinavian type trap for surveying and population activity studies and monitoring of adult flight activty in control of Red Palm Weevil [Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Col.: Curculionidae)] causing damage on date palm and palm trees at Miracle Hotel in Antalya (Centre) in 2007-2008 has been presented.
The adults captured in ten traps with pheromone (ferrugineol) and ten traps without pheromone were recorded by counting according to their sexes per week.
First adults were captured in the traps with pheromone on April 13, 2007 and on March 7, 2008. The minimum daily temperatures in these days were above 14.3°C. The last adults were trapped on November 30, 2007 and December 26, 2008; and continued to appear until above 9.5°C of daily average temperatures.
The most adult captures were reached on June 22, and November 2, 2007; June 27, and November 7, 2008 as two peaks.
Total of 289 adults in 2007 and total of 548 adults in 2008 were captured in traps with pheromone. No adults were captured in traps without pheromone. The efficacy of “Rhyfer®â€? pheromone was found to be 100%.
The sex ratios (male:female) in traps with pheromone were obtained  as 1/1.37 and 1/2.17 in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

The results show that “Rhyfer®â€? pheromone + Scandinavian type trap is a highly attractive pheromone + trap system which can attract both males and females of Red Palm Weevil; the pheromone + trap system can be used for the survey studies indicated for the presence of the pest on palms (Palmae/Arecaceae) and Cycades (Cycadaceae); the adult flight activity for its control and monitoring population activity studies in this study.
