Determining the biological performance of air-assisted orchard sprayer against codling moth [C<em>ydia pomonella</em> (L.)] [Lepitoptera: Tortricidae] in apple orchards

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine spraying characteristics of air assisted orchard sprayer and standard sprayer which are used in apple orchards against Codling moth [Cydia pomonella (L.)] for effective chemical applications. For these sprayers, tracer deposit, penetration, uniformity of distribution and biological efficiency were evaluated for different conditions. Two sprayers were compared by using the characteristics. Thus, it is possible to give practical advices to spray with proper machine and characteristics. The tests were conducted in two steps, which were spraying characteristics and biolocigal efficiency. The efficiency of air-assisted orchard sprayer applications was higher than standard applications. Tracer deposits on the tree were increased 3% with air-assisted application respectively. At the air-assited applications, tracer deposit on soil was lower (48%) than standard applications. In addition, tracer deposits were measured up to 16 meters at the air-assisted applications. While the measurement distance was increasing tracer deposits on air samples were dicreased linearly. For biological efficiency spraying applications with air assisted orchard sprayer were more successful (15-29%) than applications with standard sprayer.
