Some new and effective methods against to weeds in vegetable production: mulch textile, brush weeder and push hoe

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of some physical and mechanical against to weeds, problem in organic and traditional vegetable production, in Adana provinces of Turkey in the years 2008-2009. The effect of mulching (mulch textile, corn stalks mulch and peanut shell mulch), hoeing (hand hoe, push hoe, cultivator, rotary cultivator) and brushing (horizontal rotating brush weeder) were determined against to weeds with the study. Most of these applications were investigated first time in Turkey or the world. The experiments were designed according to randomized block design with four replications. Mechanical methods were applied at intervals of 2 weeks and three times. Weeds were calculated before the application of the methods. Annual and perennial weeds were calculated short time before the application of the methods. The effect of the applications on weeds were determined intra-row, inter-row and both spaces, also  effectiveness on tomato yield was calculated. Dominant species identified in the trial area were; Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers., Cyperus rotundus L., Convolvulus arvensis L., Chrozophora tinctoria (L.) Rafin. and Portulaca oleracea L. As a result of the studies; mulch textile (geotextile) was the most effective application for overall weeds and no weeds arise on this material so it was provided sufficient control alone. The most effective applications were mulch textile, rotary cultivator and cultivator in inter-row area while hand hoeing and rotary cultivator were followed mulch textile, the most effective application, intra-row and both inter and intra-row areas. All applications caused an increase with respect to the tomato yield and the highest values were obtained by hand hoeing, rotary cultivator and mulch textile applications. The methods were recommended to control weeds trouble in organic and conventional farming systems; due to mulch textile is more efficient, economical and advantageous compared to other synthetic mulches; vegetable mulch materials are free or low cost and using of cut hoe is easy and need less labor than a classic hand hoe.  Furthermore brushing is a method can be applicate especially for annual weeds in organic production.
