A FORMAL AND TECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF CARL DITTERS VON DITTERSDORF’S DOUBLE BASS CONCERTO NO.2 IN D MAJOR

Abstract

This study aims to examine the D Major Double Bass Concerto No.2 by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, a composer of the Classical period, in terms of its form, technique and historical context. As one of the late representatives of the classical period, Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf has gained an important place through his works for string instruments. The D Major Double Bass Concerto is notable both for being one of the early examples of the double bass repertoire and for reflecting the period's understanding of form and expression. The preface to the Henle Verlag edition states that Dittersdorf's Double Bass Concerto in D Major (also referred to as E-Dur) was composed for Friedrich Anton Pischelberger (1740-1813) in Großwardein around 1767. Written for the double bass, which mostly played an accompanying role in its period, this concerto demonstrates Dittersdorf's approach pushing technical and melodic boundaries. This concerto, one of the rare works that highlight the soloistic aspect of the double bass, reveals both the evolution the instrument in the 18th century and the reflections of the classical understanding of form on instrumental music. The work holds both historical and pedagogical value in terms of double bass performance and education. The qualitative method was employed in the research; the musical score of the work was analysed and relevant studies in the existing literature addressing the concerto were examined. The literature review shows that the analyses of Dittersdorf's D Major Double Bass Concerto are scarce and usually consist of general evaluations or brief performance reviews. In this context, the study aims to fill an significant gap in the field of double bass education and performance by addressing both the musical and technical components of the concerto.

CARL DITTERS VON DITTERSDORF’UN 2 NUMARALI RE MAJÖR KONTRBAS KONÇERTOSU ÜZERİNE BİÇİMSEL VE TEKNİK BİR İNCELEME

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Klasik Dönem bestecilerinden Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf’un (1739-1799) 2 Numaralı “Re Majör Kontrbas Konçertosu”nu biçim, teknik ve tarihsel bağlam açısından incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf, Klasik Dönem’in temsilcilerinden biri olarak, yaylı çalgılar için yazdığı eserlerle önemli bir yer edinmiştir. Re Majör Kontrbas Konçertosu, hem kontrbas repertuvarının erken örneklerinden biri olması hem de dönemin form ve ifade anlayışlarını yansıtması açısından dikkate değerdir. Henle Verlag’ın önsözünde, Dittersdorf’un Re Majör Kontrbas Konçertosu’nun (Mi Majör olarak da anılır) Großwardein’de, 1767 civarında Friedrich Anton Pischelberger (1740-1813) için bestelenmiş olduğu bilgisi yer almaktadır. Döneminde çoğunlukla eşlikçi bir rol üstlenen kontrbas için yazılmış bu konçerto, Dittersdorf’un teknik ve melodik sınırları zorlayan bir yaklaşım sergilediğini göstermektedir. Kontrbasın solistik yönünü ön plana çıkaran nadir eserlerden biri olan bu konçerto, 18. yüzyılda kontrbas çalgısının geçirdiği evrimi ve Klasik form anlayışının enstrümantal müziğe yansımalarını gözler önüne sermektedir. Eser, kontrbas icrası ve eğitimi açısından hem tarihsel hem de pedagojik değer taşımaktadır. Araştırmada nitel yöntem kullanılmış; eser analiz edilmiş ve mevcut literatürde konçertonun yer aldığı çalışmalar incelenmiştir. Literatür taraması, Dittersdorf’un Re Majör Kontrbas Konçertosu üzerine yapılmış analizlerin sınırlı olduğunu, genellikle genel değerlendirmeler veya performansa yönelik kısa incelemelerle sınırlı kaldığını göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, konçertonun hem müzikal hem teknik bileşenlerini ele alarak, kontrbas eğitimi ve performansı alanında önemli bir boşluğu doldurmayı hedeflemektedir.
