Abstract

ÖZET

Selenyum tiroid hormonu metabolizması, antioksidan savunma ve immün sistemin düzenlenmesi

başta olmak üzere vücutta birçok mekanizmada rol alan ve birçok enzime kofaktör olarak

katılan esansiyel bir elementtir. Selenyum eksikliğinin yaşlanma, kanser, insülin direnci, diyabet,

kardiyovasküler ve nörodejeneratif hastalıklar, artmış mortalite riski, immün sistem hastalıklarıyla

ile ilişkili olabileceği belirtilmektedir. Serum selenyum seviyesini istenilen düzeyde tutmak için

selenyumdan zengin olan besinler yeterli miktarda diyette yer almalıdır. Selenyumun diyabetes

mellitus ile ilişkisinde literatürde çelişkili veriler bulunmakta bu nedenle, mekanizması tam olarak

açıklanamamaktadır. Sonuç olarak selenyunum diyabetle ile ilişkisinin hangi düzeyde olduğunun

belirlenmesi için daha fazla çalışma yapılması gerekmektedir.

ABSTRACT

Selenium is an essential element involved in many mechanisms in the body, especially in thyroid

hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense and regulation of the immune system, and involved

as a cofactor in many enzymes. It is reported that selenium deficiency might be associated with

aging, cancer, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, increased

mortality risk and immune system diseases. To keep serum selenium level at desired levels

it should be included in the diet. In the literature, there are contradictory data about the relationship

of selenium with diabetes mellitus, therefore the mechanism cannot be fully explained.

As a conclusion, more studies need to be for determining the level of association with selenium

and diabetes.
