Hipnoterapinin Depresyon Tedavisindeki Etkinliği: Sistematik Bir Derleme

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 16, 43 - 59, 31.07.2025

Abstract

The Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy in the Treatment of Depression: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Depression is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that significantly affects the quality of life of individuals worldwide. In addition to pharmacological interventions, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy are used to treat depression. Hyp- notherapy stands out as a method that aims to change negative thoughts and behavior patterns by accessing un- conscious processes. This study aimed to review research conducted between 2005 and 2025 that examined the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in treating depression. Keywords were determined, and article titles, keywords, and abstracts were searched. These searches were performed on 22.02.2025 using the ProQuest, Scopus,Taylor& Fran- cis Online, Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, and EBSCOhost databases. Only studies conducted in Turkish or English were included in this review. Studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded, leaving 17 studies for analysis. The reviewed studies concluded that hypnotherapy is effective in reducing depressive symptoms, espe- cially when used in combination with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Hypnotherapy provides benefits such as improved autonomic nervous system balance, enhanced self-compassion, and strengthened psychological flexibili- ty. However, due to the predominance of single-sample studies, more comprehensive research is needed to establish the efficacy of hypnotherapy in treating depression. The limited number of studies measuring the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in depression treatment highlights the need for further research in this area.
