OREXIS AND THE RELATED CONCEPTS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE TRANSLATION PROBLEM

Abstract

Translating philosophical texts requires more effort than simply expressing words in another language. It is indispensable first to understand the new world of meaning that the philosopher reveals in the source text, then reconstruct this world according to the target language. For this reason, translating philosophical texts is a painful process for both the translator and the reader compared to other translations. In this study, we will focus on the current translations of ‘orexis’, one of the essential concepts of Aristotle’s philosophy, and its related concepts ‘epithumia’, ‘thumos’ and ‘boulesis’. The problems encountered during transferring these concepts to the target language will be described. It will be claimed that four different methods can be used in the translation process: translation according to the context of the use of the concept, translation according to the genus-species relationship, translation by qualification and direct transferring of the words in their original form.

ÇEVİRİ SORUNU BAĞLAMINDA OREKSİS VE İLİŞKİLİ KAVRAMLAR

Abstract

Felsefe metinlerinin çevirisi sözcüklerin bir başka dilde ifade edilmesinden öte bir çaba gerektirir. Filozofun kaynak metinde ortaya koyduğu yeni anlam dünyasını öncelikle anlamak, sonrasında hedef dile uygun olarak bu dünyayı yeniden inşa etmek gerekir. Bu nedenle felsefe metin çevirileri diğer çevirilere nazaran hem çevirmen hem de okur için sancılı bir süreçtir. Bu çalışmada Aristoteles felsefesinin önemli kavramlarından birisi olan ‘oreksis’ ve onunla ilişkili ‘epithumia’, ‘thumos’ ve ‘boulesis’ kavramlarının mevcut çevirileri üzerinde durulacaktır. Bu kavramların hedef dile aktarılması esnasında karşılaşılan problemler betimlenerek çeviri sürecinde kullanılabilecek dört farklı yöntem, yani kavramın kullanım bağlamına göre çeviri, cins-tür ilişkisine göre çeviri, niteleme yoluyla çeviri ve orijinal halleriyle aktarım yöntemi ayırt edilecektir.
