A Review Of Studies Regarding Science Literacy In Preschool Education Institutions
Abstract
Science literacy is the ability to utilize current knowledge with full awareness, which includes following new scientific developments, adoption of such knowledge and assessing discoveries critically. Science education in preschool covers practical trainings so as to ensure the permanency of new concepts in a child’s life in the plainest and the most concrete way. The aim of this study is to describe science literacy trainings and practices to improve children’s science literacy in accordance with teachers’ opinions, and to determine gaps in knowledge and teaching if any. The study used a qualitative research method. The study sample consisted of nine preschool teachers working at different schools in Bilecik, Turkey. A semi-structured interview form, which was developed by the researcher and in parallel with expert opinions, was used as a data collection instrument of the study. The participant teachers stated that they did experiments, did activities from various sources, made use of science related videos, made observations, investigations and researches with children. They also indicated that children used the materials alternately and they provided them from families when the materials were scarce. The teachers expressed that they emphasized the doing and living learning method to improve children’s science literacy, meaning that each activity should be completed independently by each child.
