Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors About Probiotic Activities of Family Doctors, Pediatrician and Pharmacists in Turkey

Objective: Today, there is growing interest in the potential health benefi ts of probiotic foods by both health professionals and consumers. Health professionals should have
adequate knowledge of probiotics that play an important role in the protection and development of health. This study was planned to determine the knowledge and
attitudes of family physicians and pediatricians on the subject of probiotic products
Material and
Method:
Information on determining demographic data and probiotic content, usage and behavior of family physicians, pharmacists and pediatricians in Sakarya
The questionnaire form was completed with face to face interview method and online. The study included 135 family physicians, 74 pediatricians and 97 pharmacists.
Data evaluated by SPSS 24.0 package program.
Findings and
Results:
Family physicians answered the questions about their general knowledge about probiotics in 67.4% of them and 16.3% in poor / very poor answers. 59.5% of
pediatricians in the middle, 36.5% considered good. 70.1% of pharmacists stated that they know microorganisms in probiotics.
Conclusion: Physicians are observed to have distrusts of probiotics. Possible reasons for this may be that the level of evidence for probiotics is controversial and there are no
guidelines on which microorganisms may be used in which indications of reliable organizations. As a result, in parallel with the ever-increasing progress of studies
showing positive effects of probiotics on health, informing about the rational use of probiotics has been found necessary. It is thought that physicians and Pharmacists
need to support existing information through various trainings, bearing in mind that this information is a key factor in the transfer and implementation.

Aile Hekimleri, Pediatristler ve Eczacıların Probiyotik Kullanımları Hakkında Bilgi, Tutum ve Davranışları

Abstract

Giriş ve Amaç: Günümüzde hem sağlık çalışanları hem de tüketiciler tarafından
probiyotik gıdaların potansiyel sağlık yararları konusunda artan ilgi vardır. Sağlığın
korunması ve geliştirilmesinde önemli bir rol oynayan probiyotikler hakkında
sağlık çalışanlarının yeterli bilgi sahibi olması gereklidir. Bu çalışma aile
hekimleri, pediatristler ve eczacıların probiyotik ürünler konusundaki bilgi ve
tutumlarının belirlenmesi amacıyla planlanmıştır.

Materyal ve Metod:
Sakarya’da görev yapan aile hekimi, eczacı ve pediatristlerden, demografik
veriler ve probiyotik içerik, kullanım ve davranışlarını belirlemeye yönelik
bilgiler 20 sorudan oluşan anket formu ile yüz yüze görüşme yöntemi ve online
olarak doldurulmuştur. Çalışmaya gönüllü 135 aile hekimi, 74 pediatrist ve 97
eczacı katılmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde, SPSS 24.0 paket programı
kullanılmıştır.

Bulgular:
Aile hekimleri, probiyotiklerle ilgili genel bilgi düzeyleri hakkındaki
soruya  %67.4’ü orta, %16.3’ü kötü/çok
kötü cevabını vermiştir. Pediatristlerin %59.5’i orta, %36.5’i iyi olarak
değerlendirmişlerdir. Eczacıların ise %70,1’i probiyotiklerin içindeki
mikroorganizmaları bildiğini belirtmişlerdir.







Tartışma ve Sonuç:
Hekimlerde, probiyotiklerle ilgili güven sorunu olduğu gözlemlenmektedir. Bunun
olası nedenleri, probiyotiklerle ilgili kanıt düzeylerinin tartışmalı olması ve
güvenilir organizasyonların oluşturduğu hangi endikasyonlarda hangi mikroorganizmaların
kullanılacağına dair kılavuzların olmaması olabilir. Sonuç olarak
probiyotiklerin sağlık üzerine olumlu etkilerini gösteren çalışmaların her
geçen gün artmasına paralel olarak probiyotiklerin akılcı kullanımı üzerine de
bilgilendirme gerekliliği olduğu görülmüştür. Hekimler ve eczacıların bu
bilgileri aktarmada ve uygulamada temel etken olduğu akılda tutularak çeşitli
eğitimler aracılığı ile mecvut bilgilerin desteklenmesi gerektiği
düşünülmektedir.
