Determining Middle School 7th Grade Students’ Perceptions of the Concept of Atom Through Metaphors
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the metaphorical perceptions of 7th grade middle school students towards the concept of "Atom." The "phenomenology" design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The sample of the study consists of 150 students studying in 7th grade. As a data collection tool, a form consisting of 1 question directed at the determined concept was used. The obtained data were analyzed using content analysis. It was determined that the students participating in the study produced 39 different metaphors. The metaphors produced by the students were grouped into 6 different categories. As a result of the research, it was determined that the most frequently recurring metaphor by students was the Solar System. It was observed that the mental images that students thought of while creating metaphors focused on different properties of the atom.
