The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between social media dependencies of teacher candidates and academic procrastination behaviors. In addition, the differentiation of teacher candidates' social media dependencies and academic procrastination behaviors in terms of various variables were also examined. Social media addiction, 'intensive use of the internet, the desire to be on the internet constantly, being aggressive when deprived of the internet, distancing from social environment and family' It is a type of addiction that appears in the form of. Social media addiction causes people to compromise on eating, sleep and social issues, and postpone many activities that people need to do. Students who are addicted to social media frequently show procrastination behaviors. Due to the increase in the use of internet and social media especially among the young population in our country, it is very important to examine and follow the problems that may arise from this situation and to take the necessary precautions.
2. Method Instruments
Universe constitutes the teacher candidates who are studying in different departments at Aksaray University Faculty of Education In the 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the study consisted of 8 different departments and four class from Aksaray University in 2018-2019 academic year and 1006 teacher candidates at different grades. In order to collect data; Personal Information Form developed by the researcher, l Social Media Addiction Scale “developed by Tutgun Ünal and Deniz (2015) and” Academic Procrastination Scale developed by Çakıcı (2003) were used. The analysis of the obtained data was analyzed in SPSS 21.0 program.
3. Findings, Discussion and Results
According to the findings of the study, the level of social media addiction of pre-service teachers was found to be low. It is seen that the higher the family income of the teacher candidates, the higher the social media addiction rate. As teacher candidates' duration of social media use increases, their social media addiction rates also increase. The increase in the frequency of social media use also increases the level of social media addiction. It was understood that as the time the teacher candidates spent on social media increased, the rate of social media addiction also increased.
It was found that the academic procrastination behavior levels of the teacher candidates were above the middle level. It can be said that pre-service teachers exhibit procrastination behavior academically. In the study, it was found that male participants 'academic procrastination scores were higher than female participants' academic procrastination scores.
In the study, it was determined that the relationship between internet and social media use and academic procrastination behaviors was significant. Participants spend a lot of time on the internet and social media and cannot leave these environments in time. Therefore, the participants do not do their academic duties on time, such as doing their homework, preparing for exams, and following their plans, and they show procrastination. In the studies conducted, it was stated that the duration of social media use affects occupation, and as the duration of the participants use social media media increases, they postpone their academic work.As the social media addiction increases, the teacher candidates spend less time studying, delay their homework, do not follow the lesson plan, and usually work for exams on the last days. It can be said that pre-service teachers either do not do or postpone their academic homework because they want to do more and more enjoyable things on social media. It is seen that the teacher candidates participating in the research have academic procrastination behavior. Procrastination behavior is more common in male teacher candidates.Social media addictions lead prospective teachers to academic procrastination.The academic procrastination level is above the intermediate level. Therefore, they need to get rid of their social media addiction. Studies have found that students' social media attitudes are effective in academic procrastination. Studies have shown that the academic procrastination levels of the participants are above the medium level.
Bu araştırmanın amacı, öğretmen adaylarının sosyal medya bağımlılıkları ile akademik erteleme davranışları arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesidir. Ayrıca öğretmen adaylarının sosyal medya bağımlılıklarının ve akademik erteleme davranışlarının çeşitli değişkenler açısından farklılaşma durumları da incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın evreni 2018-2019 eğitim öğretim yılında Aksaray Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesinde öğrenim görmekte olan öğretmen adaylarından oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemi ise, 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında Aksaray Üniversitesinde eğitim gören sekiz farklı branştan ve dört farklı sınıf düzeyinden oluşan 1006 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada verileri toplamak amacıyla; araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen “Kişisel Bilgi Formu”, Tutgun Ünal ve Deniz (2015) tarafından geliştirilen “Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı Ölçeği” ve Çakıcı (2003) tarafından geliştirilen “Akademik Erteleme Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizi ve çözümlenmesi için “SPSS 21.0” programı kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda; öğretmen adaylarının sosyal medya bağımlılık seviyesinin az seviyede bağımlı oldukları ve akademik erteleme düzeylerinin ise orta seviyenin üzerinde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca araştırmada öğretmen adaylarının sosyal medya bağımlılığı ve akademik erteleme davranışları arasında birçok değişken tarafından farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir. Örneğin; öğretmen adaylarının sosyal medya bağımlılıklarının; öğrenim gördükleri anabilim dalı, aile gelir düzeyi, baba öğrenim durumu, sosyal medyayı kullanım yılı, sosyal medyada harcadıkları günlük süre ve internette harcadıkları günlük süre gibi değişkenlerle arasında anlam bakımından farklılıklar bulunmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra öğretmen adaylarının akademik erteleme seviyelerinin; öğrenim gördükleri anabilim dalı, sosyal medyada harcadıkları günlük süre ve internette harcadıkları günlük süre değişkenleri arasında anlam bakımından farklılıklar bulunmuştur.
