Email Usage: Much More Than a Habit!

Abstract

Email is one of the most widely used communication tools today. Many users have multiple email accounts for different usage purposes such as internet banking and social media profile. That makes email an indispensable part of Internet experience. The aims of this study are twofold. First, because email communication is influenced by cultural context, it examines the preferred communication ways and email usage habits of preservice teachers. Email usage contributes to communication and teaching processes in many areas. In the scope of the research, secondly, preservice teachers’ e-mail usage habits were examined in terms of three dependent variables based on active/passive self-reporting: online privacy concern, online information searching strategies and satisfaction with life. The results showed that face-to-face conversations are the most preferred method of communication of students to communicate with both other students and academic staff. Despite that academic staffs prefer primarily the email to communicate with students. Active email users began to use email at an earlier age and smartphones are the most commonly used device for checking emails for both active and passive email users. The research results indicate a significant difference in favor of active email users concerning their scores in online search strategies.

E-posta Kullanımı: Bir Alışkanlıktan Çok Daha Fazlası!

Abstract

E-posta günümüzde en yaygın kullanılan iletişim araçlarından biridir. İnternet bankacılığı, sosyal medya profili gibi farklı kullanım amaçları da kullanıcıların birden fazla e-posta hesabına olan gereksinimlerini arttırmakta ve e-posta kullanımını internet deneyiminin vazgeçilmez bir parçası haline getirmektedir. Araştırmanın iki temel amacı bulunmaktadır. İlk olarak e-posta iletişiminin kültürel bağlamlardan etkilenmesinden hareketle Türkiye’de öğretmen adaylarının tercih ettikleri iletişim yolları ile e-posta kullanma alışkanlıklarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. E-posta kullanımı pek çok alanda iletişim ve öğretim süreçlerine katkı sağlamaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında ikinci olarak öğretmen adaylarının e-posta kullanma alışkanlıkları aktif/pasif öz raporlamaları temel alınarak üç bağımlı değişken açısından incelenmiştir; çevrimiçi mahremiyet kaygısı, çevrimiçi bilgi arama stratejileri ve yaşam doyumu. Araştırma bulgularına göre kendini aktif ya da pasif e-posta kullanıcısı olarak tanımlayan öğretmen adaylarının sınıf arkadaşları ve öğretim üyeleri ile iletişim kurmak için tercih ettikleri yolların başında yüz yüze/şahsen görüşme isteğinin geldiği bulunmuştur. Buna karşın öğretim üyelerinin öğrenciler ile iletişim kurmak için daha çok e-posta aracını tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Aktif e-posta kullanıcıları daha erken yaşlarda e-posta kullanmaya başlarken katılımcıların neredeyse tamamı e-postalarını kontrol etmek için en çok akıllı telefonlarını kullandıklarını belirtmiştir. Aktif/pasif e-posta kullanıcılarının çevrimiçi ortamlarda bilgi arama stratejilerine ilişkin puanlarının aktif e-posta kullanıcıları lehine farklılaştığı saptanmıştır.
